Joybird Furniture

Context

The Joybird Design Shop was a strategy and preliminary design for the first brick and mortar experiences for the online retailer Joybird. Joybird is an online furniture retailer offering high-quality, responsibly sourced furniture that can be customized through an extensive range of fabric options and numerous furniture designs. All products are built on-demand and can be customized to match the customers’ room design.

We were engaged to conceive of the experience strategy and a modular system for a physical store experience of the Joybird brand and porduct offering. The experience needed to be mutable to range of scales and sizes, allowing Joybrid to explore different store models and quickly move in and out of markets. It is often a challenge for retailers who begin online to move into the capital-heavy and permanence of brick-and-mortar stores.

Approach

We worked with Joybird to develop a core experience consisting of the Joybird story, the ability to customize, and their products. The experience was then manifest through a scalable design with a range of implementation options.

Our idea was to put a heavy focus on the ability to customize the product to align with one’s interior design. Joybird offers the shopper a broad range of fabric options to truly personalize the product for the intended setting, and we sought to make this a key dimension of the experience. We productized this ability through the development of the Customizable Joybird, packaging their logo bird into a box offering with a collection of fabrics and accessories to dress-up the Joybird.

The bird forms were also used as a communication system, identifying highlighted product, sale items, and new inventory that was also augemented with an onsite digital shopping solution.
